Speaking of the 2nd amendment, I wonder whether maybe half the US population of 1791 lived in areas still menaced by huge bears, packs of wolves, and so on. Maybe the reason for the 2nd amendment had some element of that behind it, as well as the "well-regulated militia" bit. Obviously, things are different now.
